Dennis

We aim to have meaningful interactions with them on a weekly basis. An example of how this can occur can be seen from our work with ‘Dennis.

Dennis is partially sighted, cannot speak and has profound learning disabilities. He has been a resident of a care home in East Surrey for over 10 years. Dennis spends the majority of his time sitting in the same chair rocking. He can move his arms and legs but does not appear to have significant control of these movements. He often grabs objects or people in front of him and these movements sometimes appear forceful or even aggressive.

Visiting Dennis regularly has meant that we have been able to develop these movements into games where Dennis takes objects from one practitioner and passes them to another.

These games’ structure Dennis’s movements into interactive play and have enabled him to participate in activities rather than remain locked in his rocking motion.
