Jon

Jon is an adult with profound learning disabilities and autism. He spends a lot of his time pacing, banging against the wall or fluttering bits of string in front of his face. In 8 years of working with him his primary carer estimates that their longest interaction has been under a minute. Communication with Jon seems to be impossible and he is locked in his own world.

An Intensive Interaction Practitioner observed Jon to understand what his pacing, banging and fluttering might mean to him. She then used Intensive Interaction techniques; mirroring his actions and communicating to him in his language to try and penetrate Jon’s inner world. The results were amazing after only a few hours of this, Jon turned, looked into her eyes and smiled.

Jon cannot be cured, he will always have a profound learning disability, but he can now connect with others. He can enjoy being with other people and he can be happy. He has a right to this quality of life and Us in a Bus help him achieve it. His primary carer now uses Intensive Interaction with Jon, and they can spend up to 20 minutes interacting and playing together. This is a wonderful new part of Jon’s life.
